"Stopping the Clock" on Review for Promotion
Office of the Provost, 2009
Effective 1 July 2009
For parenting responsibilities: An Assistant Professor in the tenure track or clinical scholar track who becomes the parent of a child by birth or adoption will automatically be granted a one-year extension of the current term appointment for each pregnancy or adoption if the faculty member has equal or primary care giving responsibilities. This applies to both men and women and includes same-sex, registered domestic partners. The Assistant Professor is asked to notify the appropriate Dean, Director, or (in the case of the Divisions) Department Chair of the birth or adoption in advance, and the Dean is asked to notify the Provost's Office so that proper records for the tenure case are maintained. Faculty members have the right to opt out of the automatic term extension granted for childbirth or adoption.
For personal illness or care giving responsibilities: Other circumstances in which a one-time term extension may be considered for a tenure-track or clinical scholar faculty member include caring for a sick or disabled immediate family member or the illness or disability of the faculty member. Requests to “stop the clock” should be in writing, addressed to the appropriate Dean, Director, or (in the case of the Divisions) Department Chair as soon as the circumstances justifying the request are known. All such requests will be granted at the discretion of the appropriate Dean with the approval of the Provost.
